Stained Glass and Autism

A Window on the World

The attractive qualities which coloured glass gives to light captivates most of us and touches a tiny part of our inner world. With thanks to the National Lottery – Arts For Everyone grant, members were involved in all stages of the project and each person had the opportunity to actively participate at a point which interested them. Focussing on individual strengths the project was a positive experience for everyone. After a visit to the local cathedral and images of more contemporary examples, Sarah used her creative expertise to collage together ideas from as many people as possible to create the final design. The project took about a year in duration. Its development was recorded throughout and was directly linked to the triad of impairments, those conditions affecting all individuals diagnosed as autistic. It resulted in a large celebratory opening event, with displays of work in progress attended by funders, parents and community links.
